I came to Yoga in an unorthodox way. I went to India when I was in my early twenties in 1995 in the hope of finding meaning in my early childhood experiences.
Unexpectedly, while in India and Canada, I experienced Unity consciousness for an extended period. I had no training and no teacher and only a few yogis could explain my experience to me. I began to immerse myself in the living tradition of Vedanta.
I learned from one of the oldest Vedic traditions while integrating those wisdoms into contemporary life.
In 1998, I began offering free Vedic talks in Vancouver at the Environmental house on Maple St. but nobody came…
So I stopped teaching, hoping that one day someone would want to learn and I would be able to share the treasure of what I had learned so far.
During the 12 years of immersion in Vedic living, I started to take modern Western postural yoga classes and trainings as this type of yoga was gaining popularity.
They were so vastly different than what I had experienced however, the deeper dimensions were being alluded to. I took trainings in Anusara, Dharma Mittra, Ashtanga and Prana flow to name a few. I wanted to find the common thread.
In 2015, while taking a three-year program as Integrated Body Psychotherapist, which incorporated yogic breathing, postures and energetic practices, I simultaneously worked as a lead yoga teacher trainer and program director on the Vancouver downtown East side for a non-profit yoga studio.
I led more than 40 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training Programs over four years. Realizing the need for better pedagogy in yoga trainings, I graduated with my Master’s in Education in Contemplative Inquiry in Curriculum & Instruction in 2021.
I had been working as a private yoga therapist and Ayurvedic practitioner occasionally since 2016. Then, I worked in a clinic as a yoga therapist for three years, and deepened my love for yoga’s healing potential.
Everything I offer honours the traditional lineage from which I learned and attempts to integrate the current challenges in decolonizing yoga, trauma sensitivity and innovative yoga anatomy.
I continue to return to my original desire for teaching yoga ~ to create peace in the world by helping others to experience peace within their own heart and know, without a doubt, the connected nature of life.
As a result of my experiences, I’m committed to creating, to the best of my ability, inclusive spaces in which a person or a community of seekers can explore, be vulnerable and grow with a compassionate foundation.
I know my scope of practice as a yoga teacher, as a psychotherapist and as a yoga therapist. This distinction creates trust and transparency for those who wish to work with me.
In reverence to my teacher’s teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who developed Transcendental Meditation and his teacher, Guru Dev.
I have now led more than 60+ Yoga Teacher Training Programs in both 200 and 300 hour programs.
I am a Program Director and co-director in Whole Body Paradigm school of Yoga.
We strive to create equity-based classrooms, where the top-down approach is being re-imagined. We thrive on curiosity and creativity.
I love Vedic storytelling and I was blessed to have learned just a small window of this ancient, holistic, spiritual tradition.
