1030590_35899993When I went to yoga class on Monday morning I just thought it was another class to stretch and feel good but what happened was surprising. My teacher, Teresa Campbell from Semperviva Yoga, told us to giggle, laugh, make noise, and just get silly. My mind wasn’t awake enough to resist and I suddenly found myself at the age of 5 in a pure place of the now, full of joy and unashamed happiness. It surprised me that I hadn’t been there for a while, and it was so healing. Yup, I was rolling around on the floor, BUTT IN THE AIR, surrounded by strangers laughing at myself and not caring AT ALL because the joy was so much fun! WHAT A RELIEF.

Finding playfulness is a “task” for the serious seeker but being open and not letting shame stop you from making a fool of yourself is easy! That’s the KEY: Don’t let shame stop you! Face the Shame, Acknowledge it, Laugh at it and Move past it.

When I am faced with the worst of my inner demons, I sometimes have to laugh, there’s nothing else to do when you reach that moment of awareness. The work has been done by then.

My friends and I spontaneously share the most embarrassing experiences we’ve ever had. So much laughter, healing and joy happens at these moments. What is your most embarrassing moment? Let your friends help you laugh at yourself and let go.

Whatever makes you so embarrassed that you don’t care anymore about what people around you think is a great doorway into your innocent and beautiful self.

Maya Angelou, the American author and poet said: “I don’t trust people who can’t laugh at themselves.” Powerful stuff! This was one of those quotes that I really thought about when I heard it years ago and it helped me break into a new understanding about my serious self. Because if you can’t laugh at yourself then you must be really hard on yourself or you can’t see yourself clearly. We’re all human and the sooner we all realize it, the sooner we can know that we are all a lot closer to each other than we think. Actually, at the deepest level of existence, we are ALL ONE.

So go ahead, have a good hearty laugh at yourself. It is guaranteed to bring healing, youthfulness and at the very least a good chuckle into your heart.
